Drive east on Harding Pike toward White Bridge Road this month and the view is unfamiliar. The old Belle Meade Plaza is gone. In its place sits a construction site scraped fifty feet below grade, ringed by cranes, with vertical concrete rising in the middle of it. If you have lived here more than a few years, that view is the single biggest change to the neighborhood's daily geography since Kroger closed in January 2024.
The story most residents have heard is that something called Belle Meade Village is coming. The story worth telling in August 2026 is more specific: the excavation phase is done, the calendar of neighborhood life has shifted decisively toward Warner Parks and Cheekwood for the season, and the gateway you have known for forty years is being rebuilt around a residential address rather than a retail one.
What is actually happening at 4525 Harding Pike right now
The AJ Capital Partners project sits on the old 15.5-acre Plaza site at 4525 Harding Pike. Construction commenced in October 2025, and controlled blasting ran from November through the spring. The final blast was Friday, April 3, 2026, marked by a campaign the developer called "Boom to Bloom," with a donation to Friends of Warner Parks and vouchers handed out to drivers stopped at the Harding Pike and White Bridge Road intersection for the final fifteen-minute hold.
Where the site stands in early August:
- Excavation and controlled blasting are substantially complete, with the site taken roughly fifty feet below grade to accommodate a 900-space underground garage
- Deep foundation work is finished and vertical concrete construction is underway
- Remaining crane installations were scheduled to resume in mid-May 2026
- Chicago-based Hartshorne Plunkard Architecture is designing the project; Brasfield & Gorrie is construction manager; Fridrich & Clark is handling residential pre-sales
- Completion is targeted for 2028
The financing behind that timeline is worth knowing. AJ Capital closed a $475 million construction loan from Barings in January 2026, and the residential component, marketed as 1 Iris Lane, is reported at roughly 40 percent pre-sold with units starting at $3 million. That is a real signal about who is moving into the gateway in 2028, and it explains why the site drawings show two stone-clad residential towers of eight and ten stories rather than another anchor grocery.
The number that matters is 60 percent
The site plan calls for about 60 percent of the acreage to remain green space, public walkway, and park, with an activation of Richland Creek that connects across White Bridge Road to the Richland Creek Greenway and, from there, to Sylvan Park and McCabe Park. That single design decision matters more than the storefront count. It means the gateway will function less like a shopping center you drive to and more like an edge condition between Belle Meade proper and the pedestrian network to the north. The seven two- and three-story buildings around a central courtyard, the boutique hotel, the members' club, and the forty-plus storefronts are the visible program. The Richland Creek connection is the structural one.
A quieter gateway story a mile west
While the Plaza site holds attention, the other end of the corridor changed hands with less noise. In late December 2025, Boyle Investment Co. acquired Woodmont Centre, the two-building, 156,000-square-foot office complex at 102 and 104 Woodmont Boulevard, at the Woodmont and Harding intersection. Boyle has signaled capital improvements to a property first built in the 1980s, and their existing portfolio in Middle Tennessee runs through Berry Farms, Capitol View, CityPark Brentwood, McEwen Northside, and Meridian Cool Springs. If you use the north side of Harding for offices, medical, or lunch, the tenant mix at that intersection is likely to look different by the time Belle Meade Village opens.
Where the neighborhood actually is this month
The construction site is the news. The living, though, has moved outdoors. If you want a working August and September calendar built around what is actually within a short drive of home:
- Thursday, August 14, 2026 — Full Moon Pickin' Party at the Percy Warner Park Equestrian Center. Local headliners on the main stage, bluegrass and root pickin' circles under the trees, food from local vendors, beverages included with admission, proceeds to Friends of Warner Parks. Bring an instrument if you play.
- Saturday and Sunday, August 22 and 23, 2026 — Under the Stars at Cheekwood. Two evenings of music in the gardens, the closest thing to a formal outdoor concert setting in this part of Nashville.
- Friday, September 25, 2026 — the September Full Moon Pickin' Party at the same Equestrian Center, if you missed August.
- Friday through Sunday, April through November — live music at Belle Meade Historic Site and Winery. A dependable low-key option on any given weekend afternoon, especially in September once the heat breaks.
- Ongoing — Summer Star Party programming through the Warner Park Nature Center, held on the Special Events field at 61 Vaughn Road. Telescopes, local astronomers, no fuss.
The through-line here is that the parks and Cheekwood are doing more work than any retail address in Belle Meade this summer, and that pattern is unlikely to change until 2028. If you were relying on the Plaza for a Saturday coffee and errand loop, the honest advice is to build a new one around Warner Parks trailheads, the Nature Center, and the winery's weekend hours.
The iris footnote most neighbors miss
The developer's decision to name the residential component 1 Iris Lane is not marketing whimsy. It is a reference most current residents recognize only after it is pointed out.
Nashvillians living in Belle Meade helped establish the Nashville Iris Association in 1931, which succeeded in getting the state legislature to recognize the iris as the state flower in 1933.
In the 1930s Nashville was known internationally as "Iris City" thanks in large part to award-winning cultivars grown by Belle Meade residents. That is the heritage the 1 Iris Lane address is invoking. It is also a useful lens for reading the rest of the project: the site plan's green-space share, the Richland Creek activation, and the Friends of Warner Parks partnership all lean on the same century-old identity of a neighborhood that has always thought of itself as horticultural first and commercial second. Whether the finished village lives up to that claim is a 2028 question. The framing is worth knowing now.
A pour for the porch
One more piece of local news worth filing away. In mid-2025 Charlie and Andy Nelson took back the Belle Meade Bourbon brand from their family's distillery, Nelson's Green Brier, and relaunched the line under their own hand. The initial market is Nashville, with expansion through Tennessee to follow. Two expressions are on the shelf: Classic, aged six to eight years and bottled at 45.2 percent ABV, and Reserve, aged seven to ten years at 54.15 percent. It is a small thing, but the neighborhood's name is back on a bottle again, and the timing lines up with a season that lends itself to porches, Warner Parks after dark, and a Full Moon Pickin' ticket in the pocket.
What to do with all this
If you have owned in Belle Meade for a while, the useful summary is short. The Plaza site is a working construction zone through 2028, and the temporary loss of that retail corner is real, but the site is now past its noisiest phase. The residential program at 1 Iris Lane is already selling into a $3 million-plus buyer, which will change who your neighbors are on the west end of the corridor. The Woodmont and Harding intersection has quietly changed hands, so watch the office mix. And the calendar most worth keeping on the refrigerator this month is the one running out of Percy Warner, Cheekwood, and the Belle Meade Historic Site, not the one that used to run out of the Plaza.
If any of that has you thinking about your own position in the neighborhood, whether that is understanding what the 1 Iris Lane pricing implies for your existing home's value or quietly exploring what is available on the market before 2028, Heather Hamel is available for a private consultation.
